Preparing for Surgery

Discontinue taking aspirin or any products containing aspirin, as well as any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as Motrin, Naprosyn, Feldene, etc., two weeks before surgery.  The exception to this is if you routinely take aspirin under the direction of your internist or cardiologist.  In that case, please contact that physician and follow their instructions.  You may take Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol as directed, as needed, for pain relief.  If you are sensitive to Tylenol or acetaminophen products, please contact your medical doctor.

Please also discontinue taking all herbal supplements and Vitamin E supplements two weeks prior to surgery as this may interfere with anesthesia administered.

You may have nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to your surgery; you may brush your teeth and rinse your mouth only. You may also take medications with a very small sip of water.

Surgery and pain medication may cause constipation.  If you need a laxative, try 1-2 teaspoons of Metamucil per day and Milk of Magnesia in the evenings before bed.  Eat fiber, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and prunes.  If constipation continues or becomes a problem please contact your primary physician immediately.
